I can honestly say that this appetizer is still one of my favorite dishes, and I was absolutely ecstatic to learn that it remains a staple on the menu at Silo in Alamo Heights. I was completely taken with their Duck Spring Rolls, and I vividly remember savoring each bite. I have lived in San Antonio for 25 years now, and I remember my very first visit to Silo right after they opened. You will always find something new and exciting on the menu at Silo, but you will also be able to satisfy your cravings for their signature dishes when you’ve just got to have your Chicken Fried Oysters, or that amazing Coconut Cream Pie. Their menu changes with the seasons, and many of the ingredients are sourced locally when available. Silo has served diners in Alamo Heights, at the same location, on Austin Highway, for 20 years, and they continue to serve some of the best modern American cuisine in the city. Consistency, great management and outstanding food that keeps diners returning is obviously key to running a successful restaurant, and there is one fine dining establishment that has not only withstood the test of time, but instead, has thrived and grown into a culinary force to be reckoned with here in San Antonio. It's worth making a trip north of the city for the amazing cuisine, the incredible service, and the serene atmosphere for a cost that can't be matched by other upscale dining establishments.Studies have shown that most new, independent restaurants will fail in the first year of operation, and for those that make it past the one-year mark, most will shut their doors by the third year. We took a chance on Silo and couldn't be happier that we did. Her service enhanced a great meal and made the dining a 5-star experience to accompany the 5-star food. Through the meal, the staff were attentive but unobtrusive, and Ingrid particularly made sure our questions were answered, our bread basket was kept full, and our drinks were topped off. The portions of both appetizer and mains were perfect for the richness of the food. The chicken fried oysters were a great take on an old southern classic-not too bready, not too seasoned, tender and plump-served with seasonal vegetables and a side of fettuccine. The chicken was flavorful and moist, served with simple vegetables and a portion of mashed potatoes. The appetizer was perfectly prepared, with a sauce hinting at a demi-glace with overtones of cherry. The bread was unusual, fragrant and amazing. Based on her description, we ordered the fois gras special as an appetizer, along with the house roasted chicken and chicken-fried oysters as main courses. Our server, Ingrid M., detailed the specials (a handful of VERY complicated and exotic dishes), took our drink orders, and provided us with water and bread. The atmosphere was tranquil with lovely views of the building architecture. We were led in and escorted to the "elevated level" by the hostess via elevator and seated at a cozy table for two. While the Mapquest directions were a bit challenging (the establishment is located off of a freeway access road), the restaurant itself did not disappoint in any way.
